In a move aimed at easing the burden on electric vehicle (e-vehicle) operators and motorists in Metro Manila, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued an order on Thursday to temporarily halt the implementation of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) regulation banning e-vehicles from major thoroughfares.

The suspension comes in response to concerns raised by affected drivers and motorists regarding the strict enforcement of MMDA Regulation No. 24-022 series of 2024, which prohibits e-bikes, e-trikes, and other e-vehicles from traversing national and circumferential roads in the metropolis.

President Marcos emphasized the importance of providing an additional month for the MMDA to reassess the regulation and for affected parties to familiarize themselves with the new rules. He highlighted the need for clarity in identifying permissible routes for e-vehicles and educating operators on the updated guidelines aimed at enhancing road safety and order.

Under the suspended regulation, violators faced fines of PhP2,500, a penalty President Marcos deemed excessive considering the circumstances of affected drivers. In a short video message, he expressed empathy for the challenges faced by e-vehicle operators and emphasized the importance of providing them with sufficient time to adjust to the new regulations.

The President's directive also underscores the necessity of allowing MMDA and local government units (LGUs) adequate time to gather information and refine the implementation of the regulation, ensuring its effectiveness while mitigating adverse impacts on motorists and commuters.

President Marcos's decision to temporarily suspend the ban on e-vehicles reflects a commitment to balance regulatory measures with the practical concerns of citizens, demonstrating responsiveness to public feedback and a willingness to prioritize the welfare of affected communities in Metro Manila.
