Abu Sayyaf Member Sub-Leader Arrested in Zamboanga City

Zamboanga City, Philippines - In a joint operation led by elements of the 5th and 7th Special Action Battalions of the Philippine National Police's Special Action Force (PNP SAF), a key member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was arrested on February 12, 2023.

Isnirul Kirih, also known as Kiri or Kirin, was taken into custody in Barangay Sinunoc in Zamboanga City. He is a known ASG sub-leader operating in the provinces of Basilan and Sulu, and was listed as the second most wanted person by the Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO BAR) with a reward of PHP 5,300,000.00 from the Department of National Defense and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DND-DILG).

Kirih had a warrant of arrest for seven counts of murder and another warrant of arrest for 25 counts of frustrated murder. Kirih was found to be using several false identities, as evidenced by the recovery of several identification cards with fictitious names such as Sakirin L. Kiram, Sakirin Isnain Kiram, and Sakirin I Kiram.

The operation was supported by several law enforcement agencies including the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Sulu Provincial Field Unit (CIDG-Sulu PFU), Regional Intelligence Division PRO BAR, Regional Intelligence Unit 9 (RIU 9), Sinunoc Municipal Police Station, PRO 9, SOCO 9, and the 904th Regional Mobile Force Company, RMFB 9.

The operation, named SAF-PAOCC COPLAN “KAIDO” of the 74th Special Action Company, 7th Special Action Battalion, was coordinated with the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) for support and funding.
