Akari beat Army to break their three-game losing streak in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference on Tuesday. Led by Dindin Manabat's explosive performance of 23 points, Akari secured a 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19 victory over Army.
Despite their best efforts, Akari was unable to complete the shutout win, as the Chargers charged back strongly in the fourth set behind Manabat's impressive hitting. The seasoned campaigner, who moved to Akari to provide leadership and experience for the league's new squad, added two blocks and an ace in a vintage performance.
Chiara Permentlla also played an all-around game for Akari, contributing 13 points from the attack line, 10 excellent receptions, and eight digs. Ezra Madrigal added 10 points, including three blocks, to help anchor the team's two-hour, 18-minute victory.
Akari head coach Jorge Souza de Brito expressed his happiness and gratitude to his players for their first win, saying, "We keep on trying every single day to really train and I'm happy for them and I'm really grateful because we're performing well."
Army, on the other hand, fell to 0-3, with Royse Tubino leading the Lady Troopers with 20 points and 13 excellent receptions. Despite the loss, Army put up a strong fight, winning the tight third set after a 1-2 play by Jane Gonzales broke a 23-all count and put them at set point.
De Brito acknowledged that his team has been struggling in the beginning because the other teams are stronger, but expressed confidence that they can bring more surprises like last year. Akari's Bang Pineda also had an impressive game, contributing 19 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions, while Janine Marciano and Eli Soyud combined for 12 points.
