Over 300 Residents of Dumagat-Remontado, Quezon, and Rizal will be participating in protests against the controversial Kaliwa Dam Project. They will be traveling from Gen. Nakar, Quezon to Malacañang this February 15 to 23, 2023, to voice their opposition to the construction of the Kaliwa Dam.
The purpose of the "Alay Lakad" is to convey their collective opposition to the government and to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and to show support for better and long-term projects that will ensure the provision of drinking water to millions of citizens without causing damage and danger to their communities, forests, and the Sierra Madre.
The proposed construction of the Kaliwa Dam has caused widespread opposition from various sectors due to its potential damage and danger to the 291 hectares of mountains and sacred places in the Sierra Madre, as well as the displacement of more than 17,000 indigenous families and communities. Despite these concerns, the project is still being implemented, even as it sinks the country's 12.2 billion peso debt to China.
