In response to the recent notice issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raising the alert level of Mayon volcano to Alert Level 3, the Provincial Resolution No. 0607-2023 was enacted, declaring Albay under a state of calamity. The resolution, authored by Hon. Dennise L. Misolania and signed by Vice Governor Baby Glenda Ong Bongao, aims to ensure the swift and coordinated implementation of disaster management measures to protect the lives and welfare of the residents.
With the volcano's heightened unrest, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Bicol Regional Office remains on high alert to assist and support evacuees. Today, DSWD Bicol Regional Director Norman Laurio visited two evacuation centers in the municipalities of Camalig and Guinobatan to personally assess the situation and ensure that the evacuees are provided with adequate food and other essential needs.
During the inspection, Director Laurio verified the availability of facilities such as kitchens, restrooms, and sleeping quarters for the evacuees. He emphasized the importance of coordination between DSWD teams and local government units to ensure a synchronized and orderly management of the evacuation centers. To address the urgent requirements of the affected population, all disaster response teams will be on duty round-the-clock, with rotating shifts to promptly attend to the needs of the evacuees.
Following his visit to the evacuation center in Camalig, Director Laurio held a meeting with Mayor Carlos Irwin Baldo Jr and his team to discuss relief operations and the necessary support for the affected constituents. As the Vice-Chair for Disaster Response of DSWD Field Office V, Director Laurio also met with the Office of Civil Defense to further strategize and coordinate response efforts in light of the heightened unrest of Mayon volcano.
The declaration of Albay under a state of calamity signifies the commitment of the provincial government and relevant agencies to prioritize the safety and well-being of the residents. By mobilizing resources and strengthening coordination, they aim to mitigate the potential risks and provide effective support to the affected communities. The public is urged to remain vigilant and follow the guidance of local authorities during this critical period.
