The Philippines and Australia have affirmed their commitment to a stronger alliance following the visit of Australia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Richard Marles to the country Wednesday.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. welcomed Marles and his delegation to Malacañang Palace in Manila, where he emphasized the importance of promoting shared values and a united front in strengthening their partnership.
During their meeting, President Marcos noted that Marles' visit would be an important response to the recent actions by the Chinese Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea. He also mentioned the upcoming welcome of a contingent from Australia in the Southern Philippines, underscoring the significance of constant consultation and the promotion of the rule of law and sovereignty of nations.
Defense Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. and Special Assistant to the President Secretary Anton Lagdameo, along with representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs, were present during the meeting. Galvez and Marles later held a joint press conference at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, where they highlighted the commitment of both governments to deepening their bilateral defense relations.
Galvez noted that the visit demonstrated the steadfast commitment of the two nations to their partnership, and that Australia's relationship across the region was founded on history, personal connections, and shared interests. The Philippines and Australian governments are looking forward to further elevating their partnership as agreed by their leaders in November.
The visit of Marles and his delegation marks a significant step towards strengthening the alliance between the Philippines and Australia, particularly in the face of the ongoing territorial disputes in the region. The two nations share a common interest in promoting regional stability, and their cooperation in defense and security matters is expected to contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.
