In compliance with the joint Executive Order (EO) of Bacolod City and Negros Occidental that aims to prevent the spread of Avian Influenza, 8,000 trays of eggs from Bantayan, Cebu were seized upon entry by the Bacolod City Veterinary Office, Provincial Veterinary Office, and Bureau of Quarantine Services-Bureau of Animal Industry (BQS-BAI), and Department of Agriculture (DA) last Sunday, February 5, 2023.
According to Bacolod City Veterinarian, Dr. May Dela Torre, the eggs were seized because the shipper's permit had already expired and no other relevant documents were presented by the shipper. The team of officials immediately conducted an investigation and discovered that the shipment did not comply with the required health protocols and procedures.
As a result, the City Veterinary Office disposed of 240,000 table eggs with an estimated cost of P1.4 million. Dr. Dela Torre emphasized that the disposal of the eggs is necessary to prevent any potential risk of spreading Avian Influenza in the province.
The City Veterinarian also reminds the public, especially those in the food industry, to ensure that all shipments of animals or animal products have complete and updated permits and documents. This is to ensure that they comply with the standards and protocols set by the government to prevent the spread of Avian Influenza.
The Bacolod City Government and Negros Occidental Provincial Government have been proactive in implementing measures to safeguard their respective provinces from the spread of Avian Influenza. They continue to strengthen their monitoring and inspection of all animal and animal product shipments entering their areas to ensure that they are free from any diseases that could potentially harm the public and the local industry.
