Barbie Movie Sets PG Rating For Barbie Movie
Screebgrab from Barbie The Movie
The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has released an official statement regarding the controversial film "Barbie" and its alleged depiction of the "nine-dash line" in the West Philippine Sea.

After conducting two review sessions, thorough deliberations, and consultations with relevant government agencies, including a legal expert on the matter, the MTRCB has assigned a Parental Guidance ("PG") rating to the film.

According to the MTRCB, the PG rating means that viewers below thirteen (13) years old must be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult while watching the film. The decision was made after careful consideration of the context in which the disputed scene featuring the cartoonish map of the character "Weird Barbie" was portrayed. The Review Committee concluded that the scene did not depict the "nine-dash line" but rather represented the imaginary journey of Barbie from Barbie Land to the "real world," serving as an integral part of the story.

Emphasizing its commitment to upholding the law, the MTRCB assured the public that it has thoroughly examined all available resources before arriving at this decision. The Board also stated that it has previously taken action against filmmakers, producers, and distributors who have exhibited the fictitious "nine-dash line" in their materials.

Furthermore, the MTRCB issued a stern warning to all filmmakers, producers, and distributors, making it clear that it will not hesitate to sanction and/or ban films that feature the "nine-dash line," as it is deemed contrary to the law. This action is in accordance with Section 3(c)(d) of Presidential Decree No. 1986, the Republic Act No. 9522 (known as the Philippine Baselines Law), and the Permanent Court of Arbitration's South China Sea Arbitration Award. The statement coincides with the anniversary of the South China Sea Arbitration Award, which the nation is currently celebrating.
