Bataan Governor Jose Enrique “Joet” Garcia provided an update on Facebook regarding the State of Calamity declared in the province due to the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak.
To address the increasing cases of ASF, Bataan has been placed under a State of Calamity through Sangguniang Panlalawigan Resolution no. 277.
Governor Garcia assured the public that the pigs being sold in markets or any accredited market in Bataan are safe, as they have undergone rigorous testing. In addition to providing assistance to local hog-raisers, the objective of this initiative is to prevent the entry of affected pigs or meat into Bataan in order to protect the 75% of unaffected pig farms in the province.
By declaring a State of Calamity, the government can provide appropriate support to affected farms in Bataan, prevent price increases of goods, and provide access to financial institutions for the needs of pig farmers, in addition to assistance from the Provincial Government. As of July 9, there have been only 333 ASF-positive pigs identified in Bataan, coming from 17 out of the 58 registered backyard hog-raisers. There are still 287 pigs undergoing testing and awaiting results.
To report suspected cases of ASF, individuals are encouraged to message the official social media pages or contact the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian at 613-0409 or 0961-429-0197. Consumers are advised not to panic or be afraid, as the government is doing everything possible to address the ASF problem.
The implementation of various measures in the province continues, including surveillance and testing in farms, slaughterhouses, and markets, providing information and knowledge to affected pig farms, decontamination, depopulation procedures, and offering alternative livelihood programs to affected hog-raisers.
