In a bid to bolster national participation in sports promotion and development, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the suspension of classes in public schools at all levels and government work in Metro Manila and the Province of Bulacan on August 25.
This move comes ahead of the much-anticipated opening ceremonies of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, set to take place at the grand Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
The decision was formalized through Memorandum Circular No. 27, endorsed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on August 15. The circular underlines the government's commitment to fostering a wider engagement in sports, recognizing its significant role in national unity and well-being.
Marcos emphasized that the suspension of government work and classes in public schools is a resolute effort to provide comprehensive support to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the driving force behind ensuring the secure and triumphant commencement of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
However, the President underscored that vital government functions, including the delivery of basic and health services, disaster response, and other essential services, will continue uninterrupted.
For private companies and schools, the decision to suspend work and classes is left to the discretion of their respective leaders, offering flexibility while accommodating the enthusiasm surrounding this monumental international sporting event.
