In a meeting on Monday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Philippines and US President Joseph Biden reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen the alliance between Manila and Washington.

The two leaders cited concerns over escalating tensions in the Asia-Pacific region and agreed to work together to maintain peace, stability, and development in the area.

President Marcos emphasized the need to strengthen alliances and partnerships in the face of the new economy and geopolitical issues post-pandemic. He expressed his hope that the Philippines and the US could redefine their relationship and roles in addressing the tensions in the South China Sea and the Asia-Pacific and Indo-Pacific region.

President Biden reiterated the US' commitment to the defense of the Philippines, including the South China Sea, and supporting the Philippines' military modernization. He also announced plans to dispatch a Presidential Trade and Investment Mission to the Philippines to enhance American investment in the country's innovation economy, clean energy transition, and critical minerals sector, as well as food security.

In a joint statement, the two leaders affirmed their commitment to freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea, respecting the sovereign rights of states within their exclusive economic zones consistent with international law, and supporting the right and ability of Filipino fisherfolk to pursue their traditional livelihoods.

They also pledged to expand cooperation on environmental protections, promoting increased cooperation and knowledge sharing between the United States and the Philippines through the Science and Technology Agreement (STA), and strengthening democratic institutions, rule of law, and respect for human rights.

The leaders welcomed the creation of a bilateral Labor Working Group as part of the US-Philippines TIFA, which is expected to provide a crucial opportunity for the US and the Philippines to work together on implementing internationally recognized labor rights, facilitate exchange and dialogue among US and Philippine governments and labor unions, as well as employer organizations.

The Philippines and the US will also co-host the 2024 Indo-Pacific Business Forum in Manila to further establish the country as a key hub for regional supply chains and high-quality investment.
