Biden Reaffirms U.S. Commitment To PH Amidst Tensions In WPS

The U.S. President also commented on China's reengagement with Australia and the challenges posed by the Chinese government's tactics and activities.
During the press conference, Biden emphasized the importance of trust but verification when it comes to dealings with China. He acknowledged that China is facing both internal and external difficulties, including stagnant economic growth, which have implications for its international relationships.
The President highlighted his extensive history of meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which included over 68 hours of private discussions, dating back to his time as Vice President.
Recent events in the WPS, involving provocative actions by People's Republic of China (PRC) vessels during a routine resupply mission conducted by the Philippines within their exclusive economic zone, were also discussed.
President Biden made it clear that the United States' defense commitment to the Philippines is ironclad, and their defense agreement remains unwavering.
The President stressed that any attack on Filipino aircraft, vessels, or armed forces would trigger the Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States and the Philippines, reinforcing the U.S.'s commitment to defending its allies in the region.
