In a star-studded event at Buckingham Palace, King Charles III welcomed the President and First Lady of the Republic of Korea, along with special guests BLACKPINK, to confer Honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBEs) upon the globally renowned K-Pop sensation.
The award, a recognition of BLACKPINK's outstanding role as Advocates for the COP26 Summit in Glasgow 2021, was presented in acknowledgment of their efforts to engage millions of young people worldwide in discussions on climate change.
First appointed to the prestigious role by the UK Government in January 2021, BLACKPINK played a pivotal role in encouraging global youth participation in the UN climate change conference. Their impact resonated widely, emphasizing the importance of environmental sustainability and climate action.
In a banquet speech, King Charles III expressed his admiration for the K-Pop group's dedication to the cause. "I am truly heartened to see that the environment has not been forgotten, nor the importance of achieving a healthy balance between development and our natural heritage," he remarked. The King also commended the Republic of Korea for its commitment to carbon-free technologies, civil nuclear, and renewable energy.
Highlighting the significance of BLACKPINK's advocacy, King Charles III continued, "I applaud Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé, better known collectively as BLACKPINK, for their role in bringing the message of environmental sustainability to a global audience." He praised the group for their efforts as Ambassadors for the U.K.'s Presidency of COP26 and later as advocates for the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
The King expressed his admiration for how BLACKPINK, despite being global superstars, prioritizes crucial global issues. "I can only admire how they can prioritize these vital issues, as well as being global superstars," he stated.
