In a successful joint operation, the Bureau of Customs – Ninoy Aquino International Airport (BOC-NAIA), working closely with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIA-IADITG), intercepted a substantial parcel containing approximately 9,898 grams of shabu (methamphetamine). The estimated street value of the illicit drugs is a staggering P67,306,400.00.
The interception took place at the Paircargo Warehouse in Pasay City, where the shipment, declared as "bearing," was found to have originated from Mozambique in Southeastern Africa. The contraband entered the Philippines through Hong Kong, arriving via Ethiopian Airlines flight number ET644 on December 2, 2023.
The meticulous efforts of the composite team, employing rigorous profiling, x-ray screening, and physical examination, revealed the illicit substances cunningly concealed inside the declared bearings.
Authorities promptly apprehended the consignee, who was allegedly picking up the parcel on behalf of her online acquaintance. Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio issued a warning to the public, cautioning against the variations of the love scam increasingly used by drug smugglers to exploit unwitting Filipino partners as couriers. Commissioner Rubio emphasized that anyone identified as the owner of an illicit shipment faces imprisonment if found in violation of the law.
The arrested consignee is set to face prosecution under Republic Act (RA) 9165, also known as the Anti-Illegal Drugs Act, and RA 10863, the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
"I commend the Port, under the leadership of District Collector Yasmin O. Mapa, and our partner agencies in their unwavering commitment to put an end to the proliferation of dangerous drugs in the country," remarked Commissioner Rubio.
The BOC, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s anti-illegal drug campaign, remains steadfast at the forefront of efforts to safeguard the country's borders, preventing the entry of illegal drugs and other prohibited goods.
