Calvin Abueva, known for his ferocious style of play, is set to make a comeback to the Gilas Pilipinas national team after a five-year hiatus. The 35-year-old Magnolia forward, who is eager to wear the national jersey again, vows that fans will witness a brand-new and more matured version of the "Beast" as he prepares for the upcoming Asian Games.
"Ibang Abueva na," he confidently declared when asked about his return to the national team. Abueva, who last played for Gilas in 2018 before being sidelined due to the infamous Philippine Arena brawl between the Philippines and Australia during a pre-World Cup qualifier, appears more focused and determined than ever.
Reflecting on the turbulent period following the brawl, Abueva admitted that he went through a tough time. "Siyempre nung time na yun, na-down din ako," he said, acknowledging the emotional toll the FIBA suspension had on him and his teammates, as well as the coaches.
However, with the opportunity to represent his country again, Abueva is determined to make the most of it. He expressed gratitude to San Miguel Corp. CEO and President Ramon S. Ang and SMC Sports Director Alfrancis Chua, who also serves as Gilas team manager, for believing in him and giving him another chance despite his age and past setbacks.
"(Basta) ang sabi ko ready lang ako Boss," Abueva revealed when recounting his conversation with the top SMC officials. This readiness and commitment to serve the nation have ignited a renewed sense of purpose in the seasoned player.
Abueva, the former NCAA MVP, recognizes the responsibility that comes with representing the Philippines on the international stage. He affirmed his dedication to the team's success, saying, "Kung ano yung puwedeng itulong sa team, yun ang itutulong (natin). Kung ano yung puwedeng idagdag pa, siguro puwedeng idagdag natin."
