In a tense encounter in the disputed waters of the West Philippine Sea, a Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) ship has cut off a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) patrol vessel carrying journalists, causing a near-collision. The incident occurred on Sunday as two PCG vessels, including the BRP Malapascua, were patrolling the region on a 1,040-mile journey with several media outlets, including Agence France-Presse (AFP).
According to CG Captain Rodel Hernandez, the commanding officer of the BRP Malapascua, the two vessels would have collided on the bow had he not taken immediate action. "We would have collided on the bow had I not cut the engine and thrown it in reverse," Hernandez told reporters.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions in the region, which is claimed by both China and the Philippines. The area is rich in resources and has been the subject of territorial disputes between the two nations for years.
