Cignal HD Spikers pulled off a thrilling victory against Choco Mucho Flying Titans in a five-set match, keeping their slim semifinal hopes alive in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference. The game was played at the Philsports Arena in Pasig on Thursday.
The HD Spikers initially dominated the first two sets with a 25-14 and 25-11 scoreline. However, the Flying Titans fought back hard in the third and fourth sets, winning them with 25-19 and 25-17, respectively. The HD Spikers' last ditch effort in the fifth set proved to be too much for the Flying Titans to handle, and Cignal took the match with a 15-11 victory in the final set.
Cignal HD Spikers, with a 2-4 record, remained at seventh but the victory should fire them up as they go for a sweep of their last two eliminations games against the PLDT High Speed Hitters on March 11 and the Army Lady Troopers on March 16 for a possible shot at the last semifinal berth.
Ces Molina and Rachel Anne Daquis led the way for the HD Spikers with 17 points apiece, with Daquis clinching the game's top honors with three blocks and 10 excellent digs. Chai Troncoso and Roselyn Doria also made significant contributions with 15 points each, while middle Riri Meneses added 10 markers in a balanced offense missing in Cignal's previous games.
Choco Mucho's Isa Molde and Kat Tolentino shared scoring honors with 17 points apiece, while Des Cheng added 14 markers and Maika Ortiz chipped in seven points. Despite the loss, Choco Mucho remained at sixth with a 2-3 record, with both teams standing just behind fourth-running Chery Tiggo (3-2) and No. 5 Petro Gazz (2-2), which is playing with F2 Logistics (4-1) at presstime.
"We're very thankful to the Lord, lahat ng challenges namin, nandiyan sya," said Cignal coach Shaq delos Santos. "We know na magiging matindi yung labanan dahil alam din namin gumalaw ang Choco Mucho. Good thing is na-maintain naming yung good attitude."
