President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Philippines announced on Monday that his government will push for a review and assessment of the treaty agreements between the Philippines and the United States.
The President also stated that he aims to strengthen the partnership between the two countries on climate change mitigation and adaptation during his visit to the US.
In an interview with former Social Welfare Secretary Erwin Tulfo, President Marcos stated that the Philippines and the US will discuss the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) commitments, which is a 70-year-old agreement between the two allies. He emphasized that the MDT has to evolve as the situation in the South China Sea, Taiwan, North Korea, and other places continue to change.
Regarding climate change initiatives, the President mentioned that he will meet with top US officials to discuss “green bonds,” which are financial instruments linked to climate change solutions. He added that the Philippines already has ongoing efforts to address climate change, including assigning a dollar value to forests and using it for investment in climate change funds.
The President's US trip also includes visiting several Filipino communities, meeting with the US-Philippine Society, and attending a commemoration ceremony for the 75th anniversary of the Leyte Gulf landings.
