Coast Guard Responds To Vessel Collision In Mandaue, Cebu

Cebu City, Philippines - Yesterday, on May 21, 2023, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) swiftly responded to a collision incident involving MV ST. JHUDIEL and LCT POSEIDON 23 in the vicinity waters off Barangay Looc, Mandaue City, Cebu.
MV ST. JHUDIEL, which departed from Ormoc City, Leyte, carrying 197 passengers and bound for Cebu City, experienced a steering casualty and engine failure while underway. As a result, the vessel collided with LCT POSEIDON 23, which was en route to Ormoc City from Mandaue City.
According to the master of MV ST. JHUDIEL, 13 passengers suffered minor injuries as a consequence of the collision. In response, the PCG promptly deployed a floating asset, a land vehicle, and an ambulance to provide necessary assistance to the affected individuals. The Coast Guard Special Operations Group - Central Visayas also augmented the search and rescue operations.
LCT POSEIDON 23 was carrying 17 rolling cargoes and had 20 drivers/cargo helpers on board at the time of the collision. Following the incident, the vessel returned to its port of origin, Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City, to assess the damages incurred due to the accident.
In addition to the immediate response, the PCG dispatched the Coast Guard Marine Environmental Protection Force - Central Visayas to conduct an assessment of potential oil spillage resulting from the collision. Taking proactive measures, the Coast Guard Station Central Cebu advised the masters of both vessels to file marine protests.
Furthermore, the Coast Guard District Central Visayas directed the Maritime Safety Services Unit to initiate a thorough marine casualty investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the collision and assess any contributing factors.
