Both houses of Congress are making significant progress towards passing the 20 priority measures requested by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. by December, according to congressional leaders.
This commitment came to light following the Third Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) Meeting held in Malacañang on Wednesday.
Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri reported that the Senate has already completed roughly half of the 20 priority legislations requested by President Marcos for passage by December.
Speaking after the LEDAC meeting, Zubiri stated, "During our last LEDAC meeting, the second LEDAC meeting, the President requested about 20 bills to be passed before the end of the year. I'm pleased to announce that we've nearly finished half of them in the Senate. These will become laws, and those still pending will also become laws in the next few weeks, with the hope that the President will sign them into law."
The list of 20 bills identified as priority measures for passage by the end of December 2023 includes significant legislation such as the National Employment Action Plan, LGU Income Classification, Internet Transaction Act, BOT/PPP Act, Salt Development Industry Act, Ease of Paying Taxes, Real Property Evaluation and Assessment Reform Act, Magna Carta for Seafarers, and Anti-Agriculture Smuggling Act, among others.
Senate President Zubiri emphasized, "The President's legislative agenda is impressive, and we are committed to passing these bills as swiftly as possible, with the target of completion by the end of the year, including the General Appropriations Act."
Additionally, House Speaker Martin Romualdez reported that 18 out of the 20 legislations earmarked for year-end passage had already been approved by the House of Representatives.
He expressed the House's determination to finish the remaining measures ahead of schedule, including the General Appropriations bill.
Regarding the 17 State Of the Nation Address (SONA) measures outlined by the President, Speaker Romualdez mentioned that seven out of the 17 have already been passed on the third and final reading in the House, with the assurance that the House will pass all of them by December.
