Creamline showed their championship form as they dominated Army in a lopsided 3-set victory, 25-15, 25-20, 25-12 in the Premier Volleyball League All Filipino Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig on Tuesday.
Despite an early challenge from Army, Creamline controlled the match and secured their fifth win in six games, putting them in a good position to make it to the semifinals. Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses had the luxury of fielding his bench players to give them confidence for the upcoming games.
Creamline's starters Tots Carlos and Michele Gumabao led the team's offense with 17 and 11 points, respectively. Rose Vargas, Risa Sato, Rizza Mandapat, and Pau Soriano also contributed points to Creamline's total. The defending champions had 42 attack points compared to Army's 29.
Creamline also capitalized on their rivals' erratic service reception and scored 10 aces, including four from Vargas. They drew 19 points from Army's 19 unforced errors while giving up 10 of their own.
Honey Royse Tubino fired 12 points for Army, while Lut Malaluan, Nene Bautista, and Jeanette Villareal combined for 18 points. However, Army lost steam and failed to keep up with Creamline's power game and hustle plays.
Meneses was pleased with his team's performance, particularly his bench players. "May opportunity lang talaga makalaro ung mga stringers. Yung training naman ng first 6 namin eh same lang din ng stringers, so alam nila yung gagawin. We're happy kasi maganda ung nilaro nila," said Meneses.
Creamline played without Alyssa Valdez, who is still recovering from an injury, and Jema Galanza, who was under the weather. Despite missing two of their key players, Creamline showed their depth and dominated the game.
"I feel good since we really wanted to win while letting my other teammates play. It's very fulfilling seeing them play," said Carlos, who was named the game's top player.
Creamline will take a week-long break before facing the High Speed Hitters in their next game. Army dropped to 0-5 and will need to regroup if they hope to secure a win in their upcoming games.
