Creamline, the reigning champions of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), is preparing for a tough battle as it aims to retain its title in the upcoming Invitational Conference. The tournament is set to kick off on Tuesday, June 27, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
Alyssa Valdez, the star player of Creamline and a decorated athlete, acknowledged the challenging road ahead for her team. With a highly competitive field, Valdez expects every team to be on equal footing in the tournament. In an interview on One Sports' The Game, she emphasized the importance of a strong system and quick adaptation, given the fast-paced nature of the conference.
The Invitational Conference will feature a record number of teams, with only two teams from each pool advancing to the semifinals. The competition will be further intensified with the participation of two foreign guest squads.
Although Creamline boasts a talented roster with a combination of firepower, chemistry, and bench depth, the team remains cautious about its chances. The Cool Smashers' first major challenge will come from the Chery Tiggo Crossovers.
Chery Tiggo Crossovers' head coach, Aaron Velez, expressed his team's excitement, particularly among the rookies, who have admired not only Creamline's players but also those from other teams in the league. Velez's squad includes former league MVP Mylene Paat, EJ Laure, Ponggay Gaston, and All-Filipino Conference Best Libero Buding Duremdes. They have also strengthened their lineup with the addition of University of Santo Tomas' Eya Laure and Imee Hernandez, as well as National University's Princess Robles, Jennifer Nierva, and Joyme Cagande.
Completing Group A are Akari, PLDT Home Fibr, and newcomer Gerflor, all eager to prove their mettle against the league's best.
Bernadeth Pons, a renowned beach volleyball player, aims to contribute her experience and composure to Creamline's campaign in the tournament, which is supported by BingoPlus, ArenaPlus, Mikasa, SMART, Rebisco, Kumu, Asics, and SportRadar.
PLDT Home Fibr, a strong contender in the previous conference where they reached the semifinals, is also expected to make a mark in the title race. The High Speed Hitters have bolstered their lineup with the acquisitions of Honey Royce Tubino from the Army and reigning NCAA best setter Venice Puzon during the off-season.
Akari, on the other hand, looks to improve after finishing second-to-last in the All-Filipino Conference. Former Ateneo de Manila University standout Faith Nisperos will be a key player for Akari as they strive for a breakthrough.
PLDT and Akari are scheduled to face each other on July 1 at the San Juan venue. Fans can catch the action through live telecasts on PVL.ph, One Sports, and One Sports+, with streaming available on Smart Livestream and Cignal Play.
