As the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) gears up for the highly anticipated Press Corps Awards Night on Nov. 20 at Novotel Manila Araneta City, the spotlight will be on Jericho Cruz of San Miguel, Roi Sumang of Northport, and Justin Arana of Converge, as they receive well-deserved accolades for their outstanding performances during PBA Season 47.
Jericho Cruz, the 33-year-old dynamo from San Miguel, is set to be honored as "Mr. Quality Minutes" at the awards night. This title, equivalent to the Sixth Man of the Year award, recognizes Cruz's significant contributions coming off the bench for the star-studded San Miguel team throughout the previous season.
Cruz, who won his first championship with the Beermen during the Philippine Cup, averaged an impressive 11.3 points and is a key player for the team. This marks Cruz's second time receiving the award, with his first win during the 2015-16 season when he played for Rain or Shine. His stellar performance puts him in the company of previous winners such as Bong Alvarez, Rodney Santos, Mark Caguioa, and other PBA legends.
Roi Sumang, the reliable backcourt backup for Northport, is set to receive the William 'Bogs' Adornado Comeback Player of the Year award. Sumang made an impressive return after overcoming a hamstring injury, playing a total of 32 games during the previous season.
His averages of 8.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.0 steal per game solidified his unanimous selection for the prestigious award.
The Comeback Player of the Year award, named after three-time PBA MVP winner William 'Bogs' Adornado, celebrates athletes who successfully overcome adversity to make a triumphant return to the court. Adornado himself overcame career-threatening knee injuries to become one of the greatest players in PBA history.
Justin Arana, the promising big man from Converge, is set to lead the All-Rookie Team at the PBA Press Corps Awards Night. Named Rookie of the Year for PBA Season 47, Arana's exceptional skills and performance place him at the forefront of this prestigious honor.
The All-Rookie Team also includes notable talents such as Renato Ular of Blackwater, Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser of NLEX, Tyler Tio of Phoenix, and Encho Serrano, formerly of Phoenix. Arana's contributions showcase the bright future ahead for Converge and the PBA's newest generation of stars.
