Philippine basketball fans were caught off guard as Danny Ildefonso, a former PBA MVP and a legend in the league, announced his unretirement to join the Converge FiberXers for the Governors' Cup.

The 46-year-old Ildefonso, who retired in 2015, will join the team as part of its 15-man roster for the season-ending meet. The move was announced on Thursday, and fans were excited to see the two-time MVP and current assistant coach back in action for Friday's game against Meralco at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Ildefonso's comeback comes as a surprise to many, especially since he has been serving as an assistant coach with the Alaska franchise and later on with Converge after his retirement. With his activation, the FiberXers will now have a complete roster for the season-ending tournament.

Ildefonso has had a storied career in the PBA, becoming the league's no. 1 overall pick in the 1998 draft.

He was then acquired by San Miguel in a trade with Formula Shell, and he became the cornerstone of the Beermen. Ildefonso helped lead the franchise to a total of eight championships from 1999 to 2011.

Throughout his career, Ildefonso was named Rookie of the Year, two-time MVP winner, three-time Finals MVP, five-time Best Player of the Conference, two-time Mythical First Team, three-time Mythical Second Team, and eight-time All-Star.

Fans are excited to see Ildefonso back in action, and his return is expected to give the FiberXers a boost as they currently share the fourth to fifth spots with NLEX with similar 6-3 records. The team is coming off a 106-103 loss to the Phoenix Fuel Masters, and they will look to bounce back with the addition of Ildefonso in their lineup.
