Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman has unveiled a significant proposal to allocate a budget of P105.6 billion for State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the 2024 National Expenditure Program (NEP).

The budget allocation, as announced by Secretary Pangandaman, underscores the government's commitment to enhancing human capital development through investments in education, health, and social protection, in line with the vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

With the majority of public schools already conducting full face-to-face classes, President Marcos Jr. stressed the importance of providing access to free tertiary education for Filipinos. The proposed budget is set to fund a comprehensive education agenda benefiting over 28 million learners nationwide.

One of the key components of this educational initiative is the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education (UAQTE), which will receive an increased allocation of P21.7 billion. This funding will ensure that 3,145,098 students across the country continue to have access to high-quality tertiary education, marking a notable increase from previous budgetary provisions.

Moreover, the proposed UAQTE budget for SUCs has been raised by almost P3 billion, reflecting a substantial 14.32 percent increase compared to the previous fiscal year's allocation. This budget will also encompass provisions for the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) programs and the Free Technical-Vocational Education and Training offered by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

In a bid to create an optimal learning environment, an allocation of P3.4 billion has been earmarked for infrastructure projects in SUCs. President Marcos Jr. emphasized that enhancing education facilities is crucial to providing learners with a positive and conducive atmosphere for effective learning. These infrastructure projects will be rolled out across all corners of the nation, including remote and underserved areas.

Overall, the Department of Budget and Management has granted a substantial Php 924.7 billion to the education sector, signifying a commendable commitment of 16 percent of the total Php 5.768 trillion FY 2024 NEP.
