The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has taken action against Altai Philippines Mining Corporation (APMC) for violating environmental laws in the construction of a causeway in Sitio Bato, Brgy. España, San Fernando, Romblon.
On February 6, 2023, the DENR issued a Joint Order to APMC through its Regional Offices, Mines and Geosciences Bureau, and Environmental Management Bureau in Region IV-B MIMAROPA. The order requires APMC to immediately cease the construction and operation of its causeway, suspend its Ore Transport Permit, stop transporting ore, and deny its application for Miscellaneous Lease Agreement for violating Commonwealth Act 141 and related issuances.
Additionally, the DENR Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in the Province of Romblon has been ordered to file legal actions against APMC if warranted for cutting trees without a permit and to investigate the damage to seagrass and other marine resources caused by the construction of the causeway.
Starting from February 1, 2023, the DENR Environmental Management Bureau in MIMAROPA had already issued Notices of Violation to APMC for violating several environmental laws including Presidential Decree No. 1586, Republic Act 6969, Republic Act 9275, and Presidential Decree 705.
The DENR assured the public, especially the residents of Sibuyan Island, that it remains committed to strictly implementing environmental laws to protect the community and promote sustainable development in the Province of Romblon.
The Joint Order serves as a warning to all companies and entities operating in the region to comply with environmental laws and regulations in their activities. The DENR will not hesitate to take necessary actions against those who violate these laws and put the health and well-being of the community and the environment at risk.
