Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla expressed his satisfaction over the recent acquittal of former Senator Leila De Lima. In a statement, Remulla lauded the decision of the Muntinlupa RTC Branch 204 to drop the charges against De Lima, saying that it is a testament to the country's democratic system.

"The rule of law has prevailed and it just points out to us that the independence of the judiciary is our basic foundation of our democratic system. It's good. It's good for us. It just proves that things are working in our country," said Remulla.

He further emphasized that even without reading the decision, he believes that democracy is working, and the acquittal of De Lima proves it. "It has to be for essential circumstances where you file that kind of pleading after acquittal," he added.

Remulla's statement came after Vice President Leni Robredo expressed her delight over De Lima's acquittal. Robredo said that the ruling is a victory for truth after more than six years of "slander and lies" against the former senator.

"I am happy to join those celebrating the decision of Muntinlupa RTC Branch 204 to acquit former Senator Leila De Lima in the case filed against her. This is a victory for truth after more than six years of slander and lies against Sen. Leila, whose only crime was to stand up for what is right," said Robredo.

The Vice President also reiterated her trust in De Lima's innocence and her belief that the former senator will eventually regain her freedom and good name. She added that the dismissal of the case, due to the lack of evidence against De Lima, is a clear step towards that goal.

The acquittal of De Lima is indeed a significant moment for the country's justice system. It is a reminder that everyone, regardless of their political affiliations or beliefs, is entitled to due process and a fair trial.
