According to Focus Taiwan, Vice President Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) triumphantly declared victory in Taiwan's presidential race on Saturday, achieving a historic third consecutive term for his party.

As of 8:40 p.m. Saturday, with 99 percent of the 17,795 polling stations reporting, Lai garnered an impressive 5,543,447 votes, representing 40.1 percent of the total. This placed him ahead of his two opponents, Hou Yu-ih of the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) with 33.46 percent, and Ko Wen-je of the smaller Taiwan People's Party (TPP) with 26.44 percent, according to official Central Election Commission (CEC) vote counts.

The final confirmation of the election outcome awaits the official announcement by the Central Election Commission.

Lai's victory not only secures a third consecutive term for the DPP but also marks a historic milestone, as it is the first instance of a political party winning three successive terms in the Republic of China (Taiwan's official name) since the initiation of its inaugural direct presidential election in 1996.
