The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced that the dry run for the implementation of exclusive motorcycle lanes along Commonwealth Avenue starts today Thursday, March 9.

The exclusive motorcycle lane will be located at the third lane from the sidewalk of Commonwealth Avenue, from Elliptical Road to Doña Carmen and vice versa. The MMDA’s Acting Chairman, Atty. Don Artes, said that the dry run aims to familiarize motorcycle riders with the new policy and that no motorists will be apprehended during this period.

The implementation of the exclusive motorcycle lane is to reduce the number of fatal road crashes involving motorcycles and improve traffic flow on Commonwealth Avenue, which has recorded a total of 1,686 motorcycle-related road crash incidents for the year 2022. The MMDA Traffic Engineering Center conducted an annual average daily traffic count, revealing that a total of 154,639 motorcycles and 10,134 public utility vehicles ply along Commonwealth Avenue.

The stricter implementation of the exclusive motorcycle lane on Commonwealth Avenue will begin on March 20, with violators to be fined P500. 1-Rider Partylist Representative Bonifacio Bosita welcomed the development and appealed to all motorcycle riders to maintain order and discipline on the roads. Rodge Gutierrez of 1-Rider Partylist also expressed support for the agency's rider-friendly initiatives.

Under MMDA Resolution No. 22-15, the right outermost lane of Commonwealth Avenue shall be designated as an exclusive bicycle lane. The second lane and third lane will be designated as exclusive Public Utility Vehicles and motorcycle lanes, respectively, while the remaining lanes shall be utilized by all other motor vehicles. The MMDA hopes that the implementation of exclusive motorcycle lanes will help prevent accidents and make the roads safer for all users.
