In the wake of a controversial remark made by Joey De Leon on the September 23, 2023 episode of E.A.T.'s Gimme5 segment, TVJ Productions, the management behind the show, has issued a formal apology to the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).
In a letter addressed to Chairperson Diorella Maria G. Sotto-Antonio, TVJ Productions expressed deep regret for the incident in question.
During the segment, Joey De Leon suggested the word "lubid" (rope) in response to a question about items that can be worn around the neck. While the remark was made briefly and without any accompanying actions or elaboration, some viewers interpreted it as an insinuation of suicide, a topic known for its sensitivity and triggering nature.
The letter, dated September 25, 2023, acknowledges the potential harm caused by De Leon's comment and emphasizes the commitment of E.A.T. and TVJ Productions to responsible broadcasting.
It states, "In this regard, the whole E.A.T. management is regretful and apologetic to those who were offended by the said utterance. Rest assured that we are one with MTRCB in advocating a responsible viewing experience for the public."
The incident sparked a significant public outcry, with many viewers and advocacy groups demanding an apology and appropriate action from the show's management.
Chairperson Diorella Maria G. Sotto-Antonio has not yet issued a response to the letter.
