In a recent trial in New York, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran won a case against claims that his hit song "Thinking Out Loud" plagiarized Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On". While relieved with the outcome, Sheeran expressed frustration that such unfounded claims were allowed to go to court in the first place.

Sheeran argued that common building blocks like chords and melodies are used by songwriters all over the world and should be available for all to use.

He criticized music experts who present misleading comparisons and disinformation to find supposed similarities where none exist, and called for trusted individuals to help support the process of protecting copyright.

Sheeran also highlighted the toll that such trials take on everyone involved and expressed his gratitude to the jury for making a decision that will help protect the creative process of songwriters in the United States and around the world.

He urged songwriters and the wider community to come together and bring back common sense in music copyright.
