Ernest John "EJ" Obiena has once again made the Philippines proud by securing his third consecutive gold medal and breaking his own record in the men's pole vault at the Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.

Despite heavy rainfall that paused the event for over an hour at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh on Monday, Obiena remained focused and won his SEA Games' pole vault crown.

This victory marks his third SEA Games gold medal, having previously dominated the pole vault in 2019 in the Philippines and last year in Vietnam.

The world's No. 3 pole vaulter first cleared 5.20 meters and 5.40 meters before the competition was temporarily halted due to the rain.

After the break, he cleared 5.55 meters to shatter his old mark of 5.46 meters. He went on to clear 5.60 meters and finally, 5.65 meters to set his new record in the Games.

In a Facebook post following his win, Obiena said, "I humbly bring to the Philippines its 19th gold medal at the 32nd SEAGames, and a new SEAG record of 5.65m."
