In a significant boost to the Philippines' capacity to process and utilize data for disaster mitigation and climate change adaptation, the country and the European Union have launched the Copernicus Philippines program (CoPhil) today.

The program is part of the larger #GlobalGateway EU initiative and has been funded by the EU with EUR 10 million, which amounts to approximately Php. 610 million.

Copernicus, the EU's flagship program on Earth observation, provides a vast amount of satellite data that can be used to monitor and study environmental changes. CoPhil will support Philippine government agencies in making use of this data to enhance their capabilities in disaster management, agriculture, and forestry, urban planning, and other fields.

The launch event was attended by key stakeholders from the government, civil society organizations, and private sectors, including EU International Partnerships Director for Asia, Central Asia & Middle East Peteris Ustubs, EU Ambassador Luc Véron, Department of Science and Technology (Dost) Secretary Renato Solidum, and Philippine Space Agency Director General Joel Mariano.

The launch highlighted the significance of the partnership and the crucial role that Copernicus Philippines will play in strengthening the country's disaster resilience and supporting sustainable development.

Speaking at the launch event, EU Ambassador Luc Véron highlighted the importance of Copernicus Philippines in strengthening the partnership between the EU and the Philippines. He stated that the EU remains committed to supporting the country's efforts in mitigating the impact of climate change and natural disasters. Secretary Solidum also emphasized the importance of the program in supporting the country's efforts to achieve sustainable development goals.

With Copernicus Philippines, the Philippines can tap into the EU's wealth of knowledge and expertise in Earth observation and disaster management. The program will undoubtedly contribute to the country's efforts to improve disaster resilience, protect the environment, and ensure sustainable development.
