As the 2023 PBA Rookie Draft looms on the horizon, basketball enthusiasts are gearing up for a wave of prospective players to flood in just days before the submission deadline. Both local talents and Fil-Foreign hopefuls have until 5 p.m. on September 10 to submit their applications at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City.
An intriguing twist awaits this year's draft, courtesy of a new league policy greenlit during a PBA board of governors meeting on May 26. This policy positions Terrafirma as the No. 1 pick in the draft order, injecting an element of suspense into the proceedings.
PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial expressed his enthusiasm for the revamped rules, particularly highlighting the elimination of the 30-year age limit for Fil-foreign players. The revised eligibility criteria now dictate that any draft applicant, be it a local talent or Fil-Foreign prospect, must be at least 22 years old or have completed a minimum of two years of college by draft day.
A significant requirement states that draft applicants must have participated in collegiate leagues within the Philippines before venturing into professional leagues abroad. This condition remains valid regardless of the applicant's age. Notably, if an individual decides to enter the draft within the third year of eligibility after overseas professional play, they are exempt from any special lottery proceedings.
However, a distinct rule is in place for those who choose to enter the draft during the fourth or fifth year of eligibility post-playing abroad. For them, a computer-generated lottery among the 12 teams becomes the gateway to securing a spot.
Applicants opting to join the draft during the sixth year of eligibility or beyond, following overseas professional play, will find their applications subject to specific conditions and the board's approval.
The much-anticipated first-round draft order has been unveiled, adjusted to account for trades. The order stands as follows: Terrafirma at No. 1, followed by Blackwater at No. 2, Rain or Shine at No. 3, Rain or Shine (from Phoenix) at No. 4, NorthPort at No. 5, Phoenix (from NLEX) at No. 6, NLEX (from Converge) at No. 7, Meralco at No. 8, Converge (from Blackwater and TNT) at No. 9, Converge (from Magnolia) at No. 10, NorthPort (from Ginebra) at No. 11, and Terrafirma (from San Miguel Beer) at No. 12.
Interestingly, Terrafirma, Rain or Shine, Converge, and NorthPort have the advantage of two picks in the first round. Conversely, San Miguel, Ginebra, Magnolia, and TNT will need to wait for subsequent rounds to make their selections. As the countdown continues, basketball fans eagerly anticipate the unfolding of this year's PBA Rookie Draft with its dynamic changes and potential future stars.
