Two explosions rocked the cemetery in the southern city of Kerman, where a ceremony marking the fourth anniversary of Qasem Soleimani's death was taking place. Conflicting reports on the cause of the blasts have created confusion.
A total of 103 people have lost their lives, and over 170 others are reported injured in the aftermath of the explosions.
The incident occurred during a commemoration ceremony for Qasem Soleimani, the late Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander, who was killed in a US drone attack in 2020.
Initial reports from Iranian state television mentioned gas blasts, but conflicting statements from officials have suggested various possibilities, including a suicide attack and bombs placed on the road leading to the cemetery.
Among the injured, some are in critical condition, and an emergency medical staff member rushing to the scene after the first explosion fell victim to the second blast.
Semi-official Nournews and a hardliner member of parliament have suggested different theories, with one attributing the incident to Israel, claiming it was a terror attack involving suicide belts.
The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, via a post on X (formerly Twitter), condemned the incident, emphasizing the inhumanity of the anti-Iranian behavior. President Raisi expressed condolences, vowing to identify and punish the perpetrators behind the terrorist crime.
