On April 22, 2023, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Pasay, Philippines, caught two individuals attempting to leave the country with fake exit stamps on their passports. The victims, who were later revealed to be trafficked individuals, were supposed to board a flight to Dubai from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.
According to BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco, the victims were disguised as tourists but later admitted that they were flying abroad to work as household service workers. They had been given fake stamps on their passports by their escorts, who were supposed to facilitate their departure and help them get past the BI's primary inspection.
The two Filipinas disclosed that they had learned about the job opening through a certain "Regine" and "Onday" whom they met only through Facebook. The BI Commissioner warned the public against falling prey to such illegal tactics, reminding them that the BI has a strict policy against facilitating the arrival and departure of passengers for the purpose of expediting the conduct of immigration formalities.
Tansingco expressed concern about the dangers of online illegal recruitment, particularly during the pandemic when many Filipinos were seeking opportunities abroad. He urged the public to be vigilant and cautious when dealing with strangers online.
The victims were turned over to the custody of the Inter-Agency Against Trafficking (IACAT) for assistance in filing cases against their recruiters.
