Filipina Rescued From Abusive Employer In Thailand

The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Royal Thai Police (RTP) joined forces in a successful rescue operation resulting in the arrest of an Iraqi national involved in the rape and forced abortion of a Filipina Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW). The operation, which took place in Pattaya, Thailand on March 22, 2023, was carried out with the assistance of the Office of the Police Attaché Thailand and the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok.
The rescue operation was initiated after the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok, under the supervision of the Office of the Police Attaché, sought the assistance of the RTP's Foreign Affairs Division. The division promptly responded and collaborated closely with the Pattaya City Police Station to develop a plan to locate and rescue the victim, whose identity remains confidential for her protection.
With the support of a court-issued search warrant, the authorities were able to search the suspect's property, leading to the successful rescue of the victim on March 23, 2023. The victim's name is being withheld to ensure her safety. The suspect, identified as Mr. Ibrahim Hashim Al-ami, an Iraqi national, was apprehended along with his wife and taken into custody at the Pattaya City Police Station for further investigation.
During the rescue operation, a Social Welfare Officer provided support to the victim, creating a safe space for her to share the harrowing details of the rape incident and forced abortion. The victim underwent a comprehensive medical examination at Banglamung Hospital, where she received necessary treatment and was prescribed antibiotics for her condition resulting from the forced abortion. On March 29, 2023, she was expected to attend the court hearing for the rape case against her employer in Pattaya.
PNP Chief, PGEN Benjamin C Acorda Jr., expressed his gratitude for the successful operation and commended the unwavering commitment of the law enforcement agencies involved. He emphasized the dedication of these agencies in protecting the rights and welfare of Filipino citizens, especially overseas Filipino workers. PGEN Acorda Jr. also acknowledged the exceptional coordination and collaboration between the Royal Thai Police, the Office of the Police Attaché, and the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok, emphasizing that this joint effort sends a clear message that any form of abuse against Filipinos will not be tolerated.
This successful rescue operation stands as a testament to the enduring partnership between the Philippines and Thailand in combating transnational crimes and terrorism in the region. The collaboration showcased the commitment of both countries to ensure the safety and security of their citizens and hold accountable those who violate their rights.
