It has been reported that Filipinos are believed to be among the victims of the raging wildfire that has swept through Maui, Hawaii. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has expressed deep concern and has been closely monitoring the situation.

The death toll from the wildfire has tragically climbed to 99 as of August 14, marking a somber milestone. Authorities fear that this toll could potentially double in the next 10 days, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the region.

According to information released by the Hawaii State Emergency Management Agency, intensive search and rescue operations are currently underway to ascertain the identities and nationalities of the victims. Among those being sought are Filipinos who may have fallen victim to this devastating disaster.

DFA Assistant Secretary Paul Cortes has affirmed that efforts are being made to determine the extent of the impact on the Filipino community. While official reports on the number of affected Filipinos are still pending, Cortes disclosed that there are approximately 50 individuals in Hawaii on J1 visas and holding Philippine passports.

These individuals are participating in the exchange visitor program in the United States, adding an additional layer of complexity to the situation.

Cortes reassured that the DFA stands ready to provide assistance to the Filipinos affected by the wildfire. He stated, “Bibigyan ng ayuda, bibigyan ng konting financial assistance ng Philippine government through our Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu.” This assurance underscores the commitment of the Philippine government to aid its citizens during times of crisis.

As the devastating wildfire continues to wreak havoc, it is important to note that Hawaii’s wildfire has emerged as the deadliest in the United States in a century. This unprecedented disaster has left a profound impact on the region, with communities grappling with loss and devastation.

This report is compiled with information from Rod Lagusad and Agence France-Presse, shedding light on the gravity of the situation and the collective efforts being made to address the crisis.
