The Philippine government is preparing to bring home Filipinos stuck in war-torn Sudan following a 72-hour ceasefire declared in the region.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated that the government is doing the necessary preparations to take advantage of the lull in fighting to move people out of Sudan.
Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople is on her way to the region in anticipation of the ceasefire effectiveness, hoping to take advantage of the ceasefire to move Filipinos to safety.
The government is looking at Saudi Arabia and Djibouti in East Africa as possible locations for evacuation, although the original plan was to take Filipinos to Cairo, Egypt, despite being a longer route than other locations.
The US announced the ceasefire agreement between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which came after intense negotiations.
The US will coordinate with regional and international partners and Sudanese civilian stakeholders to assist in the creation of a committee to oversee the negotiation, conclusion, and implementation of a permanent cessation of hostilities and humanitarian arrangements in Sudan.
