The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has announced that the Final Phase of the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup will be played at the Mall of Asia Arena, while the two games of the Opening Round for the Philippines group will be played at the Philippines Arena.
This decision was ratified by the FIBA Central Board after being proposed by the FIBA Basketball World Cup Board. The main reason behind the decision was to ensure consistent and efficient transportation for both teams and fans throughout the six-day Final Phase.
The decision comes after several events were held at the Philippines Arena since November 2022, including the last Window of the World Cup Qualifiers, which identified serious concerns regarding traffic and transportation. Despite improvements made by transport and traffic engineers, the Board came to the conclusion that an event with multiple sessions in one day, like the Final Phase of the World Cup, couldn't be delivered to the required standards for the players and fans.
In order to maintain a key component of the bid, which was to establish a record attendance at the World Cup, the Board decided to play the two games of the Opening Round for the Philippines group at the Philippines Arena.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup is set to take place from August 25 to September 10, 2023, and will feature 32 teams from around the world competing for the title of world champion. This decision ensures that the Final Phase of the tournament will provide an optimal experience for all those involved, including players, fans, and organizers.
