The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on their social media page the passing of former Chairman Bayani F. Fernando.

Fernando served as MMDA’s Chairman from June 5, 2002, until November 25, 2009. He was 77 years old when he died.

The MMDA, in their Facebook post, paid tribute to his accomplishments, saying, "Thank you very much for your contributions. Rest now, Sir, for you already got the job done."

A mechanical engineer by profession, Fernando met the challenges of developing the metropolis with his own unique blend of scientific acumen and practicality.

Fernando is known as a disciplinarian and workaholic among MMDA employees. Under his stewardship, the MMDA achieved significant milestones that transformed the face of Metro Manila.

One of his most notable contributions was the introduction of rapid bus lanes, a move aimed at improving public transportation in the bustling city.

Fernando also spearheaded the "Metro Gwapo" campaign, which sought to enhance the aesthetics and overall livability of the region.

These initiatives garnered attention, earning him a reputation as a visionary.
