Former Philippine volleyball star Carmela Tunay took to social media to expose alleged non-payment issues faced by players of the Gerflor Defenders, a team adorned with a plethora of sponsors on their jerseys.
Tunay's post has sparked concerns about the financial stability of the team and has raised questions about the allocation of budget for players' salaries.
Tunay, who recently retired from professional volleyball, shared her frustration on Facebook, highlighting the challenges faced by players due to non-payment of their dues. She expressed her disappointment, stating that such incidents were a significant factor in her decision to retire from the sport.
The volleyball community was further alarmed when Tunay revealed that not only were the players left unpaid, but the team also failed to settle bills related to their training facilities.
The owner of a court facility used by the Gerflor Defenders reportedly reached out to Tunay, disclosing that the team had not paid for several months of training sessions.
Additionally, a well-known online volleyball store contacted Tunay, claiming that the Gerflor Defenders had ordered supplies worth a substantial amount, approximately 95,000 pesos, but failed to fulfill their payment obligations.
The Philippine Volleyball League (PVL) responded swiftly to the allegations, issuing a statement to assure the public that an investigation into the matter was underway.
The PVL emphasized its commitment to conducting a thorough and fair inquiry, allowing both the team's representatives and the affected players an opportunity to present their cases.
