The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has initiated an investigation into an incident that occurred during a Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) game on June 27, 2023.
A video capturing Marikina coach Elvis Tolentino hitting player Felipe Chavez has recently gone viral, sparking outrage among basketball fans and the sporting community.
In response to the incident, GAB issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to ensuring a fair and just resolution. The board assured the public that swift action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The integrity of the MPBL and the safety and well-being of all individuals involved are their top priorities.
GAB said it remains dedicated to promoting the highest standards of sportsmanship and professionalism in all sporting events under their jurisdiction. It also asserted that any actions that compromise the integrity of the game will not be tolerated.
MPBL Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes, a former PBA MVP turned MPBL executive, reaffirmed the league's stance on respect and sportsmanship in a statement released today (July 1, 2023). He condemned all forms of physical violence, both on and off the court, emphasizing the need for a standard of conduct that exemplifies professionalism, discipline, and sportsmanlike behavior.
Duremdes stressed the importance of maintaining decorum on the bench and effective, constructive communication between coaches, players, and staff throughout the game. While acknowledging the intensity of passion for the sport, he firmly stated that aggressive or harmful behavior towards others should never be tolerated.
As the MPBL season reaches its midway point and games become more intense, Commissioner Duremdes called upon teams to work together in upholding the highest standards of conduct on and off the court.
