The Phoenix Super LPG came out victorious against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, with a final score of 114-106.
RR Garcia and Encho Serrano led the charge for Phoenix, each scoring 17 points off the bench. Du'vaughn Maxwell also had an impressive showing, finishing the game with 15 points, 13 rebounds, five steals, five blocks, and four assists.
For Rain or Shine, Norbert Torres and Santi Santillan each scored 14 points to pace the team, while Rey Nambatac contributed 11 points and seven assists.
However, the Elasto Painters faced a big setback just hours before the game, as their replacement import Jordan Tolbert was found to be above the height ceiling of 6'6. This forced Rain or Shine to play all-Filipino for the second time in the conference, leaving them scrambling to bring in a fourth import in time for their next match.
Despite the disadvantage, Rain or Shine put up a gritty stance, fighting back from as much as a 23-point deficit to get within 106-110. But Phoenix held on for the win, solidifying their hold on the eighth and last quarterfinals spot. "I'd like to give kudos to coach Yeng Guiao, to his staff and his players. They were in a disadvantage going to this game," said Phoenix coach Jamike Jarin. "We were up big but you can see the heart in them because of their coach so you have to give credit to the coaching staff and players of Rain or Shine."
The loss dropped Rain or Shine to a 2-7 slate, with three straight defeats in their record. On the other hand, Phoenix improved to a 4-5 record, with three consecutive victories. Phoenix's next game is against the San Miguel Beermen on Friday, while Rain or Shine will face the NorthPort Batang Pier on saturday.
