In a strategic move, Gilas Pilipinas has announced the addition of five new players, including CJ Perez, to their roster for the upcoming 19th Asian Games. Perez, who returns to the national team after his stint in the FIBA World Cup, will be joined by Kevin Alas, Arvin Tolentino, and San Miguel teammates Marcio Lassiter and Chris Ross.
The decision to include these players stems from the uncertainty surrounding the playing status of Calvin Abueva, Jason Perkins, Mo Tautuaa, and Terrence Romeo in the Hangzhou Asian Games. Notably, all four were absent from the latest list of 37 players submitted to the Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (HAGOC), from which the final 12-man team will be selected.
Coach Tim Cone expressed the team's eagerness to receive a decision from HAGOC regarding the eligibility of Abueva and the others in the coming days. Cone mentioned, "Now we have five new players on the team starting today if the other four are still turned down," emphasizing the team's anticipation.
Team manager Alfrancis Chua praised the dedication of the entire squad, particularly the eight players whose status remains uncertain. Chua, who also serves as the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) sports director, acknowledged the sacrifices made by the players and expressed his gratitude.
The remaining regular players to complete the lineup include June Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, Scottie Thompson, Chris Newsome, Calvin Oftana, Ange Kouame, and Justin Brownlee. Roger Pogoy has withdrawn from the team due to health reasons, with Marcio Lassiter taking his place.
The Gilas Pilipinas team is scheduled to depart for China on Saturday September 23,2023 as they prepare to represent the Philippines in the 19th Asian Games.
