In the face of adversity, the members of the Philippine national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, are refusing to give in to despair as they gear up for their campaign in the FIBA World Cup. Despite a rocky start, both Roger Pogoy and Kiefer Ravena have kept their spirits high, demonstrating a determined outlook for the team's upcoming crucial match against the 10th-ranked team in the world, Italy.
"May laro pa e, so hindi pa rin kami susuko," declared Roger Pogoy, the sharpshooting guard from the TNT Tropang Giga. His words reflect the team's collective resilience, emphasizing their commitment to fight until the very end.
Kiefer Ravena, a seasoned player formerly with NLEX, echoed Pogoy's sentiment, emphasizing the need to remain composed and focused despite the challenging circumstances. "We can't be emotional at this time when we still have one game left," Ravena stressed, underlining the importance of maintaining a level-headed approach.
After a disappointing loss to Angola with a score of 80-70 on Sunday (August 27,2023), the Philippines now faces an uphill battle, sitting at 0-2 in Group A of the tournament. However, all hope is not lost for Gilas Pilipinas, as they prepare to take on Italy in their final group-stage match. To advance to the next round, the Filipinos must defeat Italy by a margin of 13 points or more.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, the undefeated Dominican Republic also needs to secure a victory against Angola, potentially resulting in a three-way tie for the second spot among Italy, Gilas Pilipinas, and Angola.
Despite the challenging odds, Kiefer Ravena emphasized that the team's current focus is squarely on their upcoming match against Italy. "We have to focus on the present, which is preparing for Italy," he asserted. This determined attitude underscores the team's dedication to their preparation and their determination to leave no stone unturned.
