Oriental Mindoro Gov. Humerlito "Bonz" Dolor on Saturday said that Puerto Galera and its surrounding areas have failed four consecutive water quality tests, indicating that the areas are unsafe for swimming and other water sports and activities.
Fifteen barangays, including Manawan, Estrella, and the rest of Pola, have been identified as having poor water quality, with some even showing traces of gasoline.
Dolor expressed his disappointment over the continuous decline in water quality, despite previous findings indicating high levels of oil and grease in the water.
While the air quality in the area has passed the tests, the water quality, whether it be freshwater or saltwater from Puerto Galera to Bulalacao, has consistently failed.
Dolor called on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Health (DOH) to come up with an official position on the matter.
He emphasized the need for action and urged the DENR and DOH to take swift measures to address the issue.
He highlighted that the findings warrant serious attention and consideration of a possible tourism activity ban in the affected areas to ensure the safety of both tourists and locals.
