The Upper Marikina Watershed Coalition said that the cancellation of the three mineral production sharing agreements has been a huge victory for environmental advocates who have long fought against the development of quarries in the Masungi Geopark Project and Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape.

The Masungi Geopark Project is known for its rich biodiversity, while the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape serves as the source of water for Metro Manila residents.

The group has been advocating for the protection of the two areas, which are vital not just for the environment but also for the health of the communities living nearby. The group has been pushing for the cancellation of the agreements as they believe that the operations of the quarries will have a negative impact on the water quality, soil stability, and air quality of the area.

The coalition has been conducting various activities such as public demonstrations, letter-writing campaigns, and social media posts to raise awareness about the issue and the importance of protecting the Masungi Geopark Project and the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape.

The group is grateful for the efforts of Undersecretary Juan Miguel Cuna, who signed the cancellation of the agreements

The Upper Marikina Watershed Coalition believes that the cancellation of the agreements is just the first step in ensuring the protection of the Masungi Geopark Project and Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape. The group is looking forward to working with the government and other stakeholders in promoting sustainable development and conservation efforts in the area.
