Governor Josh Green of Hawaii took to social media to share a poignant video of the devastating wildfires that have ravaged the picturesque landscapes of Maui.

In a heartfelt caption, he declared, "The devastation is behind me, but we will put our hope in front of us." Having surveyed the destruction firsthand during a somber walk along Front Street in Lāhainā, Governor Green expressed his deep concern for the affected communities. He announced that FEMA, in collaboration with Maui County and Mayor Bissen's team, had initiated crucial support efforts.

Following the alarming wildfire outbreak that began on August 8, 2023, President Joseph Biden Jr. wasted no time in declaring a major disaster in the State of Hawaii. The President's declaration paves the way for federal aid to supplement local and state recovery endeavors. Notably, affected individuals in Maui County will be eligible for various forms of assistance, including grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and low-cost loans to address uninsured property losses.

Furthermore, federal funds have been allocated for state, local governments, and select nonprofit organizations to aid in debris removal and emergency protective measures. This support extends to both Maui and Hawaii Counties, underscoring the federal government's commitment to comprehensive disaster relief. Hazard mitigation measures throughout the state are also set to receive funding assistance on a cost-sharing basis.

At the forefront of federal recovery operations stands Mr. Maona N. Ngwira from FEMA, who will coordinate and lead the ongoing efforts in the affected areas. Damage assessments are ongoing, and additional forms of aid will be identified as assessments are finalized.

In the midst of the tragedy, the County of Maui issued updates on the situation. In a grim revelation, officials confirmed an increase in fatalities, with 17 additional deaths reported amid the active Lahaina fire. This unfortunate development brings the total death toll to 53 individuals. The fires, which have torn through Lahaina, Pulehu, and Upcountry Maui, have left communities in mourning and seeking solace amidst the chaos.

Amid the devastation, the community has rallied to provide support. The establishment of a Family Assistance Center at Kahului Community Center offers a haven for those seeking information about missing loved ones. The center aims to assist families affected by the wildfires in locating and reuniting with their unaccounted members. The Maui Emergency Management Agency has set up avenues to aid in the process of locating missing family members, and the American Red Cross hotline is readily available to offer support to those trying to reconnect with their loved ones.
