DAANBANTAYAN, CEBU - A surprising discovery was made when workers digging a drainage ditch along the stretch fronting the Lamberto R. Te Cultural Center in Barangay Poblacion accidentally unearthed artifacts and human remains on February 14.

In response to this unexpected discovery, Dr. Jobers Reynes Bersales and his team of archaeologists conducted an archaeological investigation on the site with the full support and cooperation of LGU Daanbantayan led by Mayor Sun Shimura on Thursday, February 16.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts authorized the initial assessment.
Dr. Bersales reported that the probable age of the burials is 600-800 years old based on Chinese ceramics excavated from the site. The excavation was stopped pending an archaeological impact assessment.

Dr. Jobers Reynes Bersales, the Consultant on Museum Affairs for Cebu Province and Co-Project Director of USC-NMP Northern Cebu Archaeological Project, led the excavation of the site. On Day 3 of the Daanbantayan Salvage Archaeological Project, Dr. Bersales and his team of archaeologists uncovered more human skeletons that were initially believed to be 600-800 years old, based on the Chinese ceramics previously excavated.

Radiocarbon dating will be used to determine the age of the human remains. The discovery of these human remains and artifacts sheds new light on the history of Daanbantayan and highlights the importance of preserving our cultural heritage.
